So after a year of abuse I managed to put a slight bend in the original trailing arms. While I think they are great for desert use, plate just doesn’t hold up to the abuse of rocks. They survived a full year of hard abuse but it was time to go back to the drawing board, learn from our testing, and design something slightly stronger. The new arms are all 4130. The bottom tube is 1.75″ .188 4130 tubing. All the plate work on them is 1/8″ 4130 and the arms were TIG welded using 4130 filler rod. They will then be heat treated to a 36 Rockwell.
The new design is slightly more compact, narrower, and shorter. With over 20 pieces of plate into them, they are still complex, time consuming, but unbelievably strong.
